NOCTURNE FOR CELLO AND PIANO

An autistic trait I tend to end up channeling in my own compositional practice is that of hyperfocus: that is, focusing so intensely on one particular task that I spend many more hours than is usually healthy on that task. For myself, this has sometimes happened for up to 12-14 hours at a time, barely stopping to eat or even just take a break.

'Nocturne for cello and piano' is the product of one of these hyperfocused composing sessions.

The piece was written in one session in July 2021 - I sat down to draft some ideas for two friends of mine in Birmingham, and didn't get back up until well into the night - and when I did finally get up, I had a draft for a piece that eventually became 'Nocturne for cello and piano'.

'Nocturne' is dedicated to Fatou Sourang - one of the most wonderful people I've had the pleasure of getting to know.

'Nocturne for cello and piano' was written for Fatou Sourang and Egor Semenov in July 2021, and subsequently premiered by Crossing Borders Music in Chicago, IL, as part of their 'Composers with Disabilities' concert.
