LAMPLIGHT

Lamplight is a work for modified pierrot ensemble (flute, violin, viola, cello, piano, percussion), first composed in early 2020 in the wake of the first COVID-19 lockdown.

Based around the SCP-5005 article of the same name by Tufto, Lamplight depicts a city stranded on the edge of time and space, a haven for artists, poets, and lost souls in this cosmic horror reality. Post-minimalist accelerating and deccelerating passages mirror the mind-process of those who, as the story goes, are driven to madness by the impossible void surrounding the city, and venture out into the night, never to return.

"I've seen you before, a thousand times. The artist falling on his paintbrush as a sword. The writer who sees God in a grain of darkness. Sometimes I stop them, but mostly they ignore me. One fine day they'll walk into the night, into the echo chamber of compounded mystery. Never understanding that we built this place to be a beacon against it, the inevitable human sigh of defiance in the night."

'Lamplight' was scheduled to premiere in 2020 at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A subsequent performance is to be scheduled following the piece's reworking in 2022.
