the brown ranger
(WITH chichester festival theatre)
When 7-year-old Thomas experiences his first racially charged encounter on the park swings one day, it sparks a sudden awakening — igniting a lifelong struggle to embrace his identity.
Inspired by his hero, the Brown Ranger, Thomas begins to feel empowered in a world where he feels unseen and unrepresented in pop culture. However, as Thomas matures, the enchanting magic of his defender begins to fade, overshadowed by the harsh realities of the world around him.
The Brown Ranger is an upcoming new solo show created by Ben Grant, premiering at Chichester Festival Theatre in August 2025, featuring an original score alongside movement and visuals.
Taking inspiration from the Power Rangers, alongside pop culture and video games, the score for The Brown Ranger contains an eclectic mish-mash of styles including punk rock, film soundtracks, video game music, club beats, and much more; painting the pop culture-infused world of Thomas as he navigates the racially-charged world around him.
The Brown Ranger was made possible through Chichester Festival Theatre's Artists Development Programme, with support from Arts Council England.
The Brown Ranger is showing at The Nest, Chichester Festival Theatre, on August 4, 7, and 9.
