FOUR STUDIES ON THE SUBJECT OF OMORI
A piece for solo double bass, in four movements:
'Four Studies on the Subject of OMORI' consists of four twelve-tone row fragments that I sketched initially for use in my chamber opera, hikikomori!. While the tone rows were ultimately not used in the compositional process of hikikomori!, each one ended up serving as the foundation of this piece's four movements - each of which resembling a "study" of sorts for double bass.
'Four Studies' and hikikomori! are both heavily inspired by the video game OMORI. While hikikomori! is a more interpretative adaptation of OMORI, ‘Four Studies’ is focused more directly on the events of the game. I specifically channeled how each of the four main characters responds and reacts to an important event that happened prior to the events of the game, and how each character’s reactions relate to the game's ‘Emotions’ mechanic: Omori's neutrality, Kel's happiness, Aubrey's anger, and Hero's sadness.
