Programme note

You make a conscious choice to love someone every day.

You get high in a field in Somerset, surrounded by people at the sun sets. A drunk man in a Battles shirt comes up and puts a beanie on your head. The band on stage make waves within you. You dance around for 30 seconds, or 30 hours, you can’t tell. He leaves before you can give him his hat back.

You wake up in a hostel in Budapest. You don’t know why you’re here. You booked a flight with two days’ notice, you claim you’re getting away but there’s nothing to get away from. You get talking to someone and become fast friends; within an hour, she’s giving you a guided tour of the city. You come from different worlds but you connect nonetheless. You’re too busy trying to check out the music school to get to say goodbye.

You’re emptying out a food bowl for a hamster that hasn’t come out yet. She seems skittish, but if you put your hand out, sometimes she comes to investigate. You refill the bowl. It stinks of something and you’re not sure what it is — she seems to like it. You look across the room at her and feel as if you might grow old together.

You make a conscious choice to love someone every day. Don’t let those fires die. Let them rage on.
